get help » Free Tax Preparation Each year, New Jersey residents lose much of their return to high commercial preparation fees because they simply do not know where to turn for reliable and affordable help. Additionally, many low-income households are not claiming specialized tax credits – like the Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Education Tax Credit – designed to provide relief. Millions of dollars in specialized credits go unclaimed every year in New Jersey, often because families and individuals do not know they exist. These much-needed extra funds can be the first step on the road to financial stability, creating savings for emergencies or serving as a down payment on a home. Each year United Way of Northern New Jersey teams up with community partners – including the IRS, AARP, and others – to provide free tax preparation for low- and moderate-income families and individuals through the United Way Income Tax Assistance Program. If you have a simple return* (1040, 1040A, 1040EZ, Schedules A & B), you can utilize these free tax sites. Sites open in February and remain available through Tax Day. Day, evening, and weekend appointments make this service available to as many people as possible. Click here for a list of free tax sites in northern New Jersey.
