United Way Success By 6®
Substantial evidence points to the importance of high-quality early childhood experiences in setting the groundwork for success, both in school and life. And reading to young children is a critical part of that equation.
Through books, children are able to explore people, places, times, and events beyond their own experience. Beyond the cultivation of imagination, children who are regularly read to enter school with larger vocabularies and a broader sense of the world.
As part of our efforts to enhance the quality of early education experiences, our Book Buddies program offers opportunities for participating organizations to roll up their sleeves, get into the classroom…and read to children! Not only will you directly be helping young children, but we can pretty much guarantee you’ll benefit, too.
This program – ideal for clubs or corporate groups – allows volunteers to share the joy of reading with children and inspire them to become lifelong learners. Book Buddies volunteers visit classrooms of United Way partner child care centers to read to children, complete a literacy-focused game or craft with them, and share a healthy snack together. Volunteers then leave behind new age-appropriate books to be kept by the children or classroom.
