“So many hardworking individuals in our community are struggling like me. Last year, a qualified tax specialist helped me claim tax credits I didn’t even know I was eligible for...With your help, I am now one step closer to making ends meet.”
Aloha Wilkins, free tax recipient
Every year, United Way of Northern New Jersey teams up with the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and other community partners to provide free tax preparation for ALICE® (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) and poverty-level residents in our northern New Jersey region. In 2015, more than 150 volunteers prepared 5,150 free tax returns at libraries, community centers, and places of worship across the region. Volunteers saved filers an estimated $1 million in tax preparation fees and helped them claim nearly $1.4 million in tax credits, resulting in $5.6 million in overall refunds.
Tax Preparation Training
Each fall, United Way recruits volunteers to become IRS-certified tax preparers. Volunteers are essential to expand this vital service and meet the growing need across the region. No experience is necessary! A free training program provides all the information needed to prepare both federal and state tax returns.
Free training is offered to anyone interested in becoming a tax preparation volunteer and who can commit four hours a week from February through Tax Day. Click here to find a training in your community.
Volunteers can also take online certification courses through the IRS. Click here to learn more.
Other Volunteers Needed
Not good with numbers? No problem! There are many other opportunities to get involved in tax season. We also need volunteers to:
- Greet clients and assist with necessary paperwork
- Provide translation services
- Help residents find additional community services that may be available to them
- Offer administrative support, such as scheduling and other office tasks
For more information about joining the free tax preparation team in your community, email Monica Conover or call 973.993.1160, x529.
