A brighter, cleaner space will help United Way welcome more ALICE families in person
United Way of Northern New Jersey’s Somerville office has a fresh new look, thanks to a team of Deloitte volunteers who showed up ready to paint, plant, sort, lift, laugh and generally make things better.

The project came at just the right time. United Way is preparing to welcome more clients in person at the Somerville location, which means the space needs to feel the way support should feel: clean, professional, organized and welcoming from the moment someone walks through the door.
Deloitte volunteers helped make that happen.
Throughout the day, teams rolled fresh paint onto office walls, organized supplies, cleaned rooms, and helped prepare areas for new use. Outside, volunteers planted flowers and added care to the building’s entrance, giving visitors a brighter first impression before they even step inside. There was plenty of teamwork, plenty of good energy and, yes, probably a few people who discovered paint somewhere on their clothes.

Volunteers also rolled up their sleeves to assemble 150 snack packs for kids and more than 100 personal care kits for neighbors in need. Those small but meaningful items will help United Way offer immediate, practical support to ALICE families facing tight budgets, unexpected challenges, or moments when a little extra help can make the day feel more manageable.
One of the most meaningful additions to the refreshed office will be a food closet for ALICE families facing immediate needs.
The food closet will help United Way provide grab-and-go support to our clients when families need it most. It also helps make the Somerville office more than a place where people come for information. It becomes a place where neighbors can find resources, guidance, and a little relief during a difficult moment.

By the end of the project, the difference was easy to see. The office felt brighter, cleaner and more ready for the people it is meant to serve.
Corporate volunteer projects like this may start with paintbrushes, boxes, and garden gloves, but the impact goes further. Deloitte’s support helped create a more dignified and welcoming space for ALICE families in our community.
United Way is grateful to Deloitte and its volunteers for bringing their time, energy and generosity to this project.
