Leaders of New Jersey’s Indian American community gathered for a special dinner held at Bombay Blue in Edison, celebrating global collaboration and a shared commitment to improving life for ALICE families living paycheck to paycheck. Hosted by United Way of Northern New Jersey and event sponsors ASB Resources and the New Jersey-India Commission, the marquee guest was Kiranmai Pendyala Dutt, Ph.D., Board Chair of United Way of Hyderabad, India.

The dinner was part of Dutt’s two-day visit across New Jersey, during which United Way of Northern New Jersey CEO Kiran Handa Gaudioso and fellow changemakers shared how ALICE lives and works in the Garden State. The schedule included conversations with nonprofit and philanthropic leaders in New Jersey and New York City, highlighting innovative approaches to addressing economic hardship and community well-being.

“This was more than a meal—it was an exchange of ideas, experiences, and purpose,” said Gaudioso, who also serves as a member of the New Jersey-India Commission. “We were honored to welcome Dr. Kiranmai and showcase the challenges and resilience of ALICE households in our region.”

Guests at the dinner included supporters, community partners, and leaders from the Indian American community. Together, they explored how local and global United Way organizations can learn from one another to advance equity, economic mobility, and opportunity. New Jersey State Assemblyman Sterley S. Stanley (NJ-LD 18) presented Dutt with a framed copy of a joint legislative resolution celebrating her work strengthening the bond between India and New Jersey.

“As a member of the New Jersey State Assembly and the New Jersey-India Commission, I was pleased to honor Dr. Kiranmai Pendyala Dutt for her remarkable leadership and unwavering commitment to uplifting working families,” Assemblyman Stanley said. “Her visit reminds us that the challenges facing ALICE communities are not confined by borders—and neither is our determination to build a more equitable future together.”

MEET ALICE

ALICE   is an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, and represents the growing number of families who are unable to afford the basics of housing, food, child care, health care, technology, and transportation. These workers often struggle to keep their own households from financial ruin, while keeping our local economies running.
