Earn a Varsity Letter in Community Service

The Varsity Letter in Community Service recognizes high school students who have made an exceptional commitment to their community through volunteer work over the course of a year, heeding United Way’s call to LIVE UNITED. The goal of this program is to encourage high school students to pursue service opportunities that provide a variety of skill- and leadership-development opportunities, expand their interests, and give back to their community. Students who earn their varsity letter through the program will be recognized at an event hosted by United Way at the end of the school year.

To earn a Varsity Letter in Community Service during any given school year, students must:

  • Be enrolled in a participating high school
  • Complete 120 hours of service between July 1 and June 30
NOTE: At least 30 of required hours must be dedicated to volunteer activities that support one or more of United Way’s impact areas (education, financial stability, and health) - all volunteer activities must be verifiable
  • Complete at least one school-related volunteer activity
  • Earn an overall GPA of at least 2.0
  • Submit application and $10 fee by October 22
